SCORE Helps Create Jobs and Build Businesses

Counselors to Minnesota Small Businesses

Why is small business such a big deal? According to Dr. Chad Moutray, Chief Economist for the Office of Advocacy, “Small business drives the American economy”.  If you doubt that, here are some statistics that might convince you:

  • Half of all Americans work for a small business
  • Small businesses make up 99.7% of all employers
  • Small businesses create 60 to 80 percent of all new jobs
  • Over 500,000 small businesses start-up with employees per year
  • Home-based businesses account for 53% of all small businesses
  • Small businesses create over 50% of nonfarm gross domestic product (GDP)
  • Small businesses make up 97% of all exporters representing 29% of all export value

SCORE is a non-profit organization providing coaching, mentoring, and training for entrepreneurs and small business owners to help them start and grow profitable businesses. SCORE’s services, which are FREE, help create jobs and strengthen America’s economy. Best of all, any small business can afford SCORE’s services because most of them are FREE! You can learn more about SCORE by clicking here.

Last year, SCORE celebrated its 45th anniversary. Since 1964, SCORE has helped more than 8.5 million aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners through mentoring and workshops. More than 12,400 volunteer business counselors in 364 chapters serve their communities through entrepreneur education dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses. Nearly 170,000 services were provided online in Fiscal year 2009.

On average, SCORE has a hand in creating 25,000 new jobs each year at a cost of $200 per job, according to an impact study by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The study indicates that one out of every seven face-to-face meetings between SCORE counselors and clients results in a new business.

Today, SCORE continues to innovate with online technology and resources for entrepreneurs and business owners. SCORE launched its first-ever online client community in 2009, thanks to PartnerUp, a Deluxe Company. The SCORE Online Community provides FREE access to SCORE business experts who are available to participate in discussions and answer questions.

According to Ken Yancey, CEO of SCORE, “SCORE helps small businesses set the stage for America’s economic growth with real world advice. Together with SCORE, entrepreneurs are charting a course for success through the recession.” Yancey adds, “Every day, SCORE mentors help small businesses identify opportunities for growth, maximize cash flow and plan for success. We aid America’s economic recovery by supporting the success of America’s small businesses with business mentoring.”

Small Business Tax Help

New 2011 Income Tax Webinar

SCORE Minneapolis has just released the 2011 version of “Income Taxes for Small Businesses”.   For new entrepreneurs it will help take the mystery out of taxes!  The webinar covers two broad topics:

First, the Form 1040, Schedule C Profit and Loss for a Business.  It discusses all of the unusual items an entrepreneur may encounter as they prepare for their April 15 tax filing date, including use of personal cars and home office expenses,  expensing capital equipment cost versus depreciation, independent contractors, etc.

Second, it covers the business owner’s personal Form 1040 by integrating the Schedule C.  The business is made aware of their options for Self-Employed Retirement Plans and Health Insurance coverage, plus Self-Employed taxes for Social Security and Medicare.

This sixty-six minute discussion will not make you a tax expert, but will let you approach taxes with a level of knowledge needed to take advantage of deductions available to you.  It also points out areas where your accountant can be of help.
